Why Cleaning Pool Deck Drains Is Essential
Pool deck drains play a crucial role in keeping your pool area safe and dry. When these drains get clogged with leaves, dirt, and debris, water can pool on the deck, creating slippery surfaces and potential damage to your pool area. Regular cleaning prevents water buildup, reduces the risk of slips and falls, and helps maintain the overall appearance of your pool deck.
Ignoring clogged drains can lead to costly repairs and unpleasant odors. Plus, standing water can attract insects and algae growth, which nobody wants around their pool. So, keeping your drains clean is not just about aesthetics - it’s about safety and longevity.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Pool Deck Drains
Cleaning your pool deck drains doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Here’s a straightforward process you can follow to keep your drains flowing smoothly:
1. Gather Your Cleaning Tools
Before you start, make sure you have the right tools on hand. Here’s what you’ll need:
A drain cleaning access tool designed for pool deck drains (available in multiple sizes)
A garden hose with a spray nozzle or pressure washer with a sewer-jetter nozzle
A small bucket or container
Rubber gloves and safety glasses
A screwdriver or similar tool (if your drain cover needs to be removed)
Our specially designed drain access tool fits perfectly into various drain sizes, making it easier to remove debris without damaging the drain.
2. Remove the Drain Cover
Most pool deck drains do not have a cover that can be lifted or unscrewed. To install the Pool Deck Drain Janitors, use a dremmel tool to cut the correct size hole in your drain. Be sure to carefully remove the pieces from the drain. (wear gloves!)
3. Clear Visible Debris on the outside of the drain
Using your hands or a small scoop, remove any visible leaves, twigs, stones, mulch, or dirt from where the drain opening is on the outside of your patio. This initial clearing helps prevent larger clogs and gives the water a place to go when it gets outside the drains.
4. Flush the Drain with Water
Once you’ve removed the debris, use your garden hose to flush the drain with water. It may sound counterintuitive, but start from the outside and flush inside for 10' to 12'. This clears a path for the rest of the debris once you start flushing from the inside-out. Then flush from the inside back out again. Insert the spray nozzle directly into the drain, and slide it back and forth to break up the dirt and get it moving.
5. Replace the Drain Cover
After confirming the drain is clean and water flows freely, replace the Pool Deck Drain Janitor drain access cover securely. Make sure it’s properly seated to avoid accidents or debris falling back in.
7. Regular Maintenance Schedule
To keep your pool deck drains in top shape, clean them at least once a month during the swimming season. If you have lots of trees nearby or experience heavy storms, you might want to check more frequently.
